Both the Diamond Devils and the Moorhead Brewers received outstanding pitching from their pitchers to start out the 2006 Class C State Tournament. The Brewers could only manage three hits against the Devil’s Adam Gregg and Bruce Geislinger, while the Devils had six hits against the Brewer’s Andy Leraas, in a Devils 3-2 victory.

The Brewers jumped out to any early lead in the top of the first. The first hitter of the game, Reid Kittleson was able to reach first on an error at short. A sac bunt put Reid at second. An out later, Reid scored on a single by Chris Clemenson.

The Devils took the lead in the top half of the third inning. With one out, Craig Hawkinson singled to left field. Ryan Dwyer followed with a base hit down the left field line. Matt Goodwald drove in the Devil’s first run of the game with a single to right field. Both Ryan and Matt moved up a base when the Brewers tried to get Craig at the plate. KC Johnson earned an RBI but was robbed of a base hit when the second baseman made a diving play to his left. Brad Mazer collected the winning hit with a single to left to score Matt to end the scoring for the Devils.

The Brewers tightened the game up, scoring a run in the bottom half of the sixth. Chris Clemenson led off with a double to center field. Chris moved to third on a ground out to the shortstop. Josh Dietz scored Chris with a sac fly to left field ending the scoring for the game.

On the pitching side, Adam Gregg struggled a little in the first two innings but found it in the middle of the second. With one out and runners at second and third, Adam put it together. He struck out the next two batters, with the last strikeout on three pitches. Bruce Geislinger finished off the last two innings for the Devils, striking out three of the seven batters he faced. The highlight came when Bruce struck out the last hitter in the eighth inning. Bruce had a 1-2 count and threw a slider that the batter just waved at, sending the bat into the Brewer’s dugout scattering the players in every direction.
