With bases loaded and two outs in the top of the ninth, the St. Charles pitcher walks in the winning run for a 2-1 Diamond Devils win.

Pitching and defense were the keys to this game for both teams. In the first inning the Devils had a great opportunity to jump out into the lead. With two outs, Adam Gregg hit a line drive double over a charging right fielder. Andrew Engebretson came up next and hit a single up the middle that normally would have scored Adam but the center fielder made a perfect throw to cut down Adam at the plate.

St. Charles took the lead in the third. The Sting’s Bret Schmit led off the inning with a double to right center. One strike out later would bring Joe Magee to the plate. Joe ended up hitting a hard ground ball that went off of Craig Hawkinson’s glove at third. Matt Goodwald at short was able to pick up the deflection and throw back over to Craig to get Bret into a rundown. The rundown lasted just long enough to allow Joe to get to second base. The next batter gave the Sting the lead with a base hit.

Pat McPherson The Devils tied the game in the sixth. With one out, Pat McPherson walked on four pitches. Adam Gregg moved Pat to third with his second double of the game. Andrew Engebretson scored Pat with a ground ball to short to end the scoring in the inning for the Devils.

A fine defensive play in the seventh by the Devils kept the score tied. With a runner at second, St. Charles’ Jesse Pederson hit a line drive that was heading to the right center gap. However, the Devils second baseman Brandon Schliinz, timing his jump perfectly, snared the ball and threw over to Matt Goodwald at second to double up the runner and end the inning

The Devils took the lead in the top of the ninth. Brad Mazer walked to start off the inning. Matt Duenwald sacrificed Brad to second with a bunt. One out later, Ryan Dwyer singled between third and short. Only a diving play by the shortstop kept Brad from scoring. The Devils loaded the bases when Craig Hawkinson walked in his at bat. The winning run scored when Matt Goodwald walked to force in Brad from third.

Adam Gregg pitched for the Devils and looked just a strong in the ninth as he did in the first. With pitches in the game that were consistently clocked at 87-88 mph, Adam gave up one earned run on seven hits and four walks while striking out seven on 142 pitches.
