CJ Goodwald continues to impress as he pitched eight solid innings to lead the Devils in 6-2 victory over Cold Spring.

Watching CJ pitch on Sunday, one could not tell if he was pitching a high school game or a men’s class C regional game. With the poise not commonly seen in a first year player, CJ went out and shut down Cold Spring. Through seven innings Cold Spring could only muster one unearned run. But in the eighth inning with the pitch count nearing 110 pitches and CJ starting to tire in the heat, Cold Spring tacked on a run.

The eighth would be CJ’s last inning as Pat McPherson pitched the ninth. Pat got into a little trouble after getting the first batter to ground out to short. Pat walked the next two batters and then gave up a single to load the bases. Now in a save situation, Pat got the next batter to fly out to shallow right field and the final batter to ground out back to him.

Scoring The Devil hitters start off the scoring in the second inning. Matt Duenwald led off the inning with a base hit. The next batter attempted to move Matt up to second with a bunt but the Cold Spring pitcher caught the ball in the air for an out. Ryan Dwyer reached first on a fielding error by the third baseman. The next batter flew out to center for the second out in the inning. Matt Goodwald came to the plate and hit a ground ball to the shortstop. The throw from short was up the line forcing the first baseman to come off the base. The first baseman caught the ball and tried to tag Matt but the ball came loose and rolled down the first base line towards the outfield allowing Duenwald to score.

The Devils scored again in the fourth. With two outs and Ryan Dwyer on first, Craig Hawkinson drove a fastball to left center for a run scoring double.

The Devils would score another run in the sixth. With two outs, Andrew Engebretson singled to left. Brad Mazer was hit by a pitch in his at bat. Next up for the Devil was Matt Duenwald and he hit a pitch that bounced over the Cold Spring shortstop to score Andrew form second.

In the sixth, the Devils scored two more runs. In the Devils first at bat in the inning, Ryan Dwyer singled. Craig Hawkinson sacrificed Ryan over to second with a bunt down the third baseline. The next three Devil batters walked to score Ryan. With bases loaded, Andrew Engebretson hit a sacrifice fly to left to score the final run of the inning.

The Devils scored their final run of the game in the eighth. Brandon Schliinz led off the inning with a single and was bunted over to second by Ryan Dwyer. Craig Hawkinson stepped to the plate and hit a hanging curveball that narrowly missed being a homerun when the ball hit the top part of the fence in left field to score Brandon easily.
