The Diamond Devil’s Pat McPherson pitches nine good innings but he could not out pitch the Saint’s Paul Schumm as the Maple Plain nine come up short in a 5-2 loss.

After Andrew Engebretson’s home run, the Devil hitters came up cold in the middle innings against Paul. In the fourth through the eighth innings, the Devils sent up sixteen batters and sixteen batters were sent back to the bench. By the time the Diamond Devils got something going in the ninth, Paul had retired nineteen batters in a row.

On the other side, the Saints scored all the runs they would need in the first inning. Two runs could be chalked up to some bad luck and a mental error by the Devils.

The Saints Tyler Carlson was on second base and made an attempt to steal third. The throw from the Devils catcher Dan Boisclair beat the runner by ten feet. The tag looked good but the umpire from behind the plate called the runner safe.

The third and final run of the inning was due to a Devils mental error which allowed a Saints runner to move up from second to third on a throw home that should not have been made. In the next at bat, the runner scored on a sac fly.

In the sixth inning more bad luck for the Devils as a run scored on a ball hit to the Devils shortstop Matt Goodwald. The ball hit something in the field and hopped over Matt’s glove allowing a run to score.

The Saints scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth to end the scoring for the St. Michael Saints.
