The Diamond Devils take the number one seed in the North Star East Divisional playoffs behind the pitching of Pat McPherson on Saturday at Don Timpe field.

The Devils scored all the runs necessary to win the game in the second inning. Lee Gregg led off the second with a hit up the middle. Brad Mazer followed with a base hit to left. Brandon Schliinz scored Lee from second with a hit to center. Brad tried to make it to third but was thrown out. On the throw, Brandon took second base. Ryan Dwyer flew out to right center moving  Brandon to third. KC Johnson scored the runner with a sharp hit up the middle. Craig Hawkinson walked giving the Devils runners at second and first. An error at short loaded the bases in Matt Goodwald’s at bat. Vince Reuter flared a single over the second baseman into right scoring the final two runs of the inning.

The Devils fifth run of the game came on a KC Johnson line drive homerun to left in the fourth inning.

The Larks scored their first run of the game in the sixth inning. Kent Koch led off the inning with a double to left field. Two walks later the Larks had the bases juiced. A ground ball to second scored the run in Tom Traen’s at bat.

The Devils countered with a run in the bottom half of the sixth. Brad Mazer back from the Mexican league, singled to left for his second hit of the game. Brandon Schliinz walked moving Brad into scoring position. After a fly out to left, KC Johnson’s ground ball to second forced an out at second leaving the Devils with runners at the corners. Craig Hawkinson drove in Brad on a base hit.

The Larks scored the final runs of the game in the seventh inning. Reed Pawelk singled and then advanced to third on a Jon Schutte double to right field. After a fly out to right, a hit by pitch loaded the bases. The Devils had a chance to get out of the inning with runs scored but an attempted double play on a ground ball to short failed as the relay to first found the wall of the Devils dugout, allowing two runs to score.

Pat McPherson pitched seven innings and was two defensive plays away from a shutout. CJ Goodwald pitched the final two innings and as a result of some good defensive plays escaped unscathed.
