The Diamond Devils hosted the Maple Plain baseball alumni on Sunday before the game with the Loretto Larks.

The Devils lose their first North Star League game since the first of June. Despite the loss, the Devils finish the season with the League’s best record at 13-4.

The Devils took the lead in the second inning. Matt Duenwald singled to start off the inning but a great opportunity was wasted when he was picked off at first. Brandon Schliinz singled in the Devil’s next at bat. He was followed by Ryan Dwyer who moved Brandon up to third when he hit a double. The Devil’s next batter struck out looking. Dan Boisclair stepped to the plate and delivered a run scoring single. Matt Goodwald walked in his at bat to load the bases but the Devils left them loaded as the next batter flew out to the Lark’s first baseman.

The Devils would surrender the lead, a lead in which they would never regain, by giving up four runs in the top of the third. Only two of the runs were earned as the Devil’s defense committed three errors.

Adam Gregg's homerun In the bottom of the third, the Devils scored another run when Adam Gregg, who looked like he was swinging an aluminum bat, crushed one over the evergreens in left field. The other highlight of the inning went against the Devils. Andrew Engebretson was the batter and if it was anyone other than the Lark’s Brandon Scanlon in center, Andrew would have hit a triple. Andrew lined a ball to the gap in right center that stayed up just long enough for Brandon to make a SportCenter type diving catch.

In the fourth the Devils tied the score. Mike Hokanson started the inning with a double. Dan Boisclair walked in the next at bat to put runners at first and second. Matt Goodwald laid down a bunt; the bunt was fielded by the pitcher who threw to third. The throw was wide of third and skipped down the left field line to score Mike and allowed the other runners to move up a base. The Devils loaded the bases when KC Johnson reached first on an error. Adam Gregg was due up next and drove in the final run of the inning with a sac fly to left field.

The scored would not be tied for long as the Larks regained the lead in the next half inning. Loretto’s Brandon Scanlon doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch that was thrown to the backstop. Brandon scored on a ground ball fielder’s choice on Eric Schutte.

The Devils tied the score once again in the seventh. Matt Duenwald with one out in the inning was hit by a pitch. CJ Goodwald as a pinch runner replaced Matt. Brandon Schliinz singled to move CJ up to second. One out later, Pat McPherson walked to load the bases. Joe Wood who was pinch hitting for Dan Boisclair delivered and RBI single to left. That would be it for the scoring as the Devils could not capitalize on another bases loaded situation.

The Larks would win this one in the tenth inning as they scored three runs. Jay Schutte hit the game winning run in on a double.

The Devil’s pitchers pitched well enough to win this game. Adam Gregg did not have his normal command but considering he had a cortisone shot two days prior to the game and should not have been pitching, did a great job. Paul Kunz relieved Adam and did not give up a run in the two innings that he pitched. Andrew Pratt got the decision in this game by giving up three unearned runs in the tenth.
